The Lingering Lutz Fire and Others – Aug 26
Here’s the latest on other fires in the vicinity of the Bitterroot Valley – as of the afternoon of August 26.
East of the valley, the Lutz Fire on the Beaverhead-Deer Lodge National Forest is currently estimated at 584 acres. It’s a lightning-caused forest fire that is south of Skalkaho Highway and about 20 miles west of Phillipsburg, near Emerine Mountain.
Work is being done to protect an electronics site on Emerine Ridge and other locations, but generally the fire is being allows to play a natural role in the forest, with areas of heavy downed trees nearby.
West of the valley, in Idaho, the Storm Complex of three lightning-caused fires is now reported to be 250 acres in size. The fire is in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness west of Big Creek Lakes.
The Clear/Nez Fire Zone reported 18 new lightning-caused fires after the Wednesday evening storm. The largest is the 20 acre Narrows Fire in the Salmon River Ranger District. Meanwhile, the 4,500 acre East Fork Fire in the Meadow Creek drainage of the Red River District has not grown much in the last 24 hours.
