First-year University of Montana Athletic Director Kent Haslam has a message for student athletes, no matter where they are, or whether school is in session or not.

“You’re a Griz 365, 24/7,” Haslam said on Tuesday, May 21, as he was driving back from the Big Sky Conference spring meetings in Pocatello, Idaho. “What we expect from our student athletes, regardless of where you are physically located, and whether or not you’re competing, you still represent the University of Montana.”

Haslam said its up to the student athlete to let their coaches and other officials know about any trouble that might reflect on their team or the Grizzly program.

“If there are any incidences that they need to let their coaches know about which can be passed on to the administration, we expect them to report those problems,” Haslam said. “Whether that happens here in Missoula, or somewhere else in the state of Montana, or in their home town, we expect them to follow the student athlete code of conduct, and to let us know when things have happened.”

Haslam said he plans to meet with all student athletes at the beginning of the school year to let them know exactly what is expected of them.

“I’ll be heading into my first full year as athletic director in the fall of 2013, and I’ll meet with every team as they come back to campus,” Haslam said. “I want to meet with each freshman as they’re here for the first time, and have a conversation with them, along with transfers, or those who are starting their athletic careers here. I want to make it clear what is expected, and this is where you’re going to be held accountable.”
