Volunteer for A Winter’s Day at Gordon Reese Cabin
Mark October 2 on your calendar if you have a desire to volunteer at the popular cross-country ski lodge, the Gordon Reese Cabin.
That's the day a special phone line at the Wisdom Ranger District will be open at 8 a.m. to take volunteer reservations for the ski season.
Volunteers stay overnight at the cabin at no charge as a host on Tuesdays and Fridays, helping with cabin and trailhead facilities during the day. Volunteers tend to the woodstove, clear snow from outhouse path and trailhead paths, clear snow from the deck and doors and restock firewood from the basement of the cabin to the main floor. The phone number on October 2 is (406) 689-3371 and is the only phone open for reservations.
If you just want to spend the night the cabin for $10 nightly rental, check the national Forest Service reservation website, www.recreation.gov.
The cabin is about a half mile from the Chief Joseph Pass parking area for 30 miles of cross country ski trails in the area. For more information, call (406) 689-3243.
