Watch Bruce Springsteen Bring an 89-Year-Old Grandmother Onstage for ‘Dancing in the Dark’

In a move that recalled the song’s MTV-era roots, Bruce Springsteen invited a girl onstage for his and the E Street Band’s rendition of “Dancing in the Dark” last night. But this time there was a twist.

A woman named Evelyn was at Springsteen’s tour stop in Toronto yesterday to celebrate her 89th birthday. She was enjoying a raucous evening in the pit just in front of the E Street Band, who are touring in support of The River reissue. Springsteen apparently noticed Evelyn, and invited her for a spin during the hits-filled encore. You can watch the video above.

The birthday girl gives Springsteen a lingering hug after being helped up by a stage hand. They dance for a few seconds, and then Evelyn leaves to resounding applause, all to the accompaniment of a muscular sax solo by Jake Clemons, nephew of the late Clarence Clemons.

This isn’t the first time Springsteen has invited a mature audience member up for a dance. He memorably shared the stage with his mother Adele during “Dancing in the Dark” back in 2013. This same tour has also seen Springsteen bring up a very pregnant woman onstage, fulfilling a dream that was part of her bucket list — which was on a sign that Springsteen showed the audience.

“Dancing the Dark,” the lead single from 1984’s Born in the U.S.A., remains Springsteen’s highest charting single, reaching No. 2 in the U.S. and No. 4 in the U.K.
