Over 100 homes have been evacuated due to the West Mullan Fire that has been burning since last Sunday near Superior.

Strong winds have helped to increase the fire to over 4,000 acres, according to Fire Information Officer Pat McKelvey. The American Red Cross has opened an emergency evacuation center at Superior Elementary school.

McKelvey said some progress has been made in fighting the fire on the outskirts of Superior.

"We've got the fire hooked above Superior," McKelvey said. "Now, they're working on bringing it with the line in a west to east direction and trying to tie that together. Primarily visible right above those commercial businesses and what not right above Superior."

A 5-mile stretch of the Clark Fork River remains closed near Superior, so that helicopters can draw water without placing recreationsts in danger. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
