The 41 Complex forest fire is still burning along the Skalkaho Highway in places.
However, to allow the public and hunters access to popular areas in the Deerlodge-Beaverhead and Bitterroot National Forests, the Montana Department of Transportation is opening portions of the mountain road Tuesday, September 20.
However, there will NOT be any "through traffic."
The road will open on the Bitterroot Valley side to mile post 17 - which is where the Railroad Creek Road links in from the Skalkaho-Rye Road.
On the Philipsburg side, the road will be open to the top of Skalkaho Pass, at the Crystal Creek Campground.
The rest of the road will remain closed, because of the snags and rocks that are falling onto the road from the fire, and because with hot, dry weather returning by the end of the week, the fire could grow again.
