If you’re one of the many who are eagerly anticipating a zombie apocalypse, or even just a big fan of ‘The Walking Dead,’ this video explains how zombies could potentially be created and how accurate most of the fictional zombies are.
First of all, it’s scientifically impossible for anyone to come back from the dead in zombie form, so that’s out. However, hypothetically speaking, a “rage zombie” virus could be possible if a virus only attacked our brains via neurons and left the rest of the body intact. It would have to pick specific neurons to travel and yet also keep the rest of the brain intact as well.
Our weakest point is our nose, thanks to the olfactory nerve which leads directly to the brain and would allow for zombie-like effects without destroying the brain. The virus would effect the frontal cortex, amygdala, and ventromedial hypothalamus which would essentially turn a person into a constantly hungry, brain-dead and very aggressive creature. They also wouldn’t be able to recognize any friends or family, and would be constantly on the lookout for food. (Sounds like us after a bender.)
So while the “risen from the dead and rotting” zombies are ruled out by science, there is always a possibility of the right virus with the right neuron specificity causing “rage-virus” zombies. Start stocking up on your zombie-killing weapons now.
