With the Bitterroot River beginning to run too muddy and too high to safely float, it's a good time to have fun alongside the river.

That's the plan for families Saturday, May 3, at Hamilton's River Park from 12 noon to 4 p.m.

The Bitterroot College UM has organized the "Spring Safety Splash" - a free event with great information about safety on the river or any body of water.

The free event will include over $1,000 in door prizes, along with music from the John Adam Smith Band.

Displays will be provided by Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, Ravalli County Search and Rescue, Ravalli County Public Health Department and a number of private river guides.

The educational information will teach lessons about high water season and general safety tips.

Roch Turner of the Bitterroot College said there would activities for the kids, too.

The park is on South 9th Street in Hamilton, next to Haynes Field and Kiwanis Park. There will be free food while it lasts.
