An open house in Florence will be this week to explain a 6 mile project on the East Side Highway in the Bitterroot Valley.

The Montana Department of Transportation has designed a reconstruction of 5.8 miles of Secondary Highway 203 (East Side Highway) from just south of Hidden Valley Road to about 3.7 miles north of Stevensville.

Department officials will be at an open house starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, October 8, at the old gymnasium of the Florence-Carlton School on Old Highway 93.

Engineers are planning to add a center/left turn lane and widen the road to 44 feet with two 4-foot shoulders. The 90-degree curves at Rathbun Lane and Ambrose Creek Road will also be "flattened" for safety, according to a MDT news release.

The project is planned for 2017, depending on design completion and funding.

No formal presentation is planned, but the project designs will be on display and the staff will discuss the project and answer questions.
