It was the first game of the new year and the first game of a COVID-19 shortened high school basketball season in Montana for the Hamilton Broncs. They hosted the Ronan Chiefs Tuesday night, January 5, at the Hamilton High School gym. Ronan won the contest 40 to 39.

The Broncs broke out to an early lead in the first quarter and led 8 to 5 at the beginning of the second period. However, Ronan outscored Hamilton in that quarter and led by two points - 16 to 14 - at the half.

Hamilton didn't take long to regain the lead in the third quarter. Ronan tied the score and it stayed tightly knotted throughout the period. The beginning of the fourth quarter was plagued by turnovers of both teams with the score tied at 27-27. Both teams had trouble finding the basket, with Ronan finally taking the lead midway through that final period. Both teams started scoring during the final two minutes of the game, with only a one-point lead for Ronan with 4 seconds left - 40 to 39, and Ronan outlasted Hamilton, winning the contest by that score - 40 to 39.

The Hamilton Lady Broncs defeated Ronan 39 to 29 in Ronan Tuesday. The girls will be at home Thursday, January 7, against Polson and KLYQ will be carrying that game. The boys will be against the Pirates up in the Polson High School gym. The Lady Broncs will be home-standing again Saturday when Whitefish comes to town. The Bronc boys will be in Whitefish for their Saturday contests.

This year's basketball schedule was shortened due to COVID-19 concerns, with regular season games starting this week and the season wrapping up on the second week in March. KLYQ is broadcasting play-by-play on selected games of both boys and girls teams through the season. The games are being heard on 1240 AM Radio, at and on the free KLYQ app on your cellphone. Just look for the KLYQ app at the Apple or Android cellphone stores.
