May 15th is the deadline to submit an application for raise and release ring-necked pheasants in Montana.

The state Upland Game Bird Enhancement Program is administered by the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks as a way to establish the bird populations in suitable areas.

Landowners can apply if the land in the project area remains open to "reasonable" public hunting. Projects must contain at lease 100 contiguous acres and include suitable cover and food and other habitat components.

Projects on private and public lands that are done in partnership with youth groups, 4-H clubs or other associations can apply, too.

Applicants must apply by mail to FWP in Helena. Approved pheasant releases will happen from August 1 to September 15.
