(Officer Christian Cameron and Sam Leyba)
At around 2:30 Saturday afternoon, Missoula police officers were involved in a River Rescue. A suspect was being sought in connection with reported thefts from a local homeless shelter in the 1100 block of West Broadway. Police Public Information Officer Travis Welsh explains.
“The man had been reportedly running from a location on West Broadway,” Welsh said. “He ran across Broadway, down the bank, and into the river. He crossed the river to an island where he was held up. The officers donned dry suits, along with Missoula City Fire Department personnel, and made their way to the island where they were eventually able to escort the man safely back to the main shoreline.”
The man was identified as 33-year-old Russell Miller and he was wearing a white, sleeveless shirt and blue jeans. According to court documents, Mr. Miller was in possession of a bag that did not belong to him. Mr. Miller took multiple items out of the bag and threw them into the river. At one point, he had two knives in his possession. Over the course of about an hour, he was told to discard the knives and he finally did so. He was eventually subdued with a taser and was taken into custody. Mr. Miller was charged with felony probation violation, felony tampering, obstructing and misdemeanor theft.
