The UM Flathead Lake Biological Station, north of the Yellow Bay State Park, will have a public open house Friday, August 9 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. University of Montana officials said boat trips will be featured on the station's 30-foot research vessel, the Jessie B. Also, new research submarines will be on display. The newly arrived subs will be used to collect data from the lake bottom. Station director Jim Elser, Bierman Professor of Ecology, will speak at 3:30 p.m. with the topic "The Future of Science at Flathead Lake."

Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks will bring along some dogs which are trained to sniff out invasive aquatic mussels at watercraft inspection stations. And UM mascot Monte will be on hand to entertain. The facility is about 17 miles north of Polson on the east side of the lake, along Highway 35, just north of Yellow Bay State Park.
