Crews continue to build fire lines on the northwest and southwest portions of the active Up Top Fire, part of the 41 Complex in the Sapphire Mountains, 10 miles east of Hamilton.
Fire traffic has increased on Hamilton Heights Road, as fire crews use that road as a quicker way to access the northwest corner of the fire. The northwest corner is burning down into the St Clair Creek drainage. An additional line is being constructed between the Up Top fire and private land to the west in case the fire crosses the main fire line. The weather forecast is for gusty winds during the middle of the week.
Burnouts are continuing across the head of Gird Creek, according to information officer Dixie Dees. Crews are extending a containment line around the fires perimeter south of Gird Point Lookout.
The Up Top Fire grew northeast toward Skalkaho Falls, and sprinklers are being used to keep the area wet around the popular attraction.
Much of the area is closed. Please check with the Bitterroot National Forest before heading out into the backcountry.
A Fire Information Trailer will be the Canyon View Church parking lot on Skalkaho Highway from 12 Noon to 7pm.
Reports on most of the area fires are at inciweb.
